Semrush: The Heavyweight SEO Platform

Semrush is a large, all-in-one SEO and digital marketing platform. It is not Squarespace-specific: it works for any website, and it is built around deep keyword and competitor data, what people search for, who ranks for it, and where your gaps are. This page is a plain-English rundown of what it is, what it does, what it costs, and who it actually suits, because for a lot of Squarespace owners it is more than they need.

Best for: Serious or competitive sites, content-heavy publishers, and agencies that want professional-grade keyword and competitor research.

What it is

Semrush is the industry heavyweight for SEO research. Rather than guiding you page by page inside Squarespace (the way a Squarespace-native tool does), it gives you the data and analysis layer behind a strategy: keyword databases, competitor traffic estimates, backlink profiles, and rank tracking. It is used by more than 117,000 paying customers and packs over 40 tools spanning SEO, paid search, content, and social. Because it is platform-agnostic, you run it alongside your Squarespace site rather than inside the editor.

What it does

Semrush is broad. The features most relevant to a Squarespace owner are:

  • Keyword research from a very large database, with search volume, difficulty, related terms, and the questions people ask.
  • Competitor analysis, showing rivals’ estimated traffic, top pages, and the keywords they rank for, so you can find openings.
  • Site audit that crawls your site and produces a prioritised list of technical SEO issues to fix.
  • Position tracking to monitor your Google rankings over time and by location.
  • Backlink analysis to see who links to you and spot link-building opportunities.
  • Content Marketing Toolkit (on the Guru tier and above): topic research, SEO content templates, and a writing assistant.
  • Historical data (Guru and above) going back to 2012, useful for spotting trends.
  • AI visibility tracking (via the newer Semrush One bundle) to see how you appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

Pricing

Semrush is a premium platform and priced like one. Annual billing saves roughly 17 percent over monthly. As a rough guide (check the Semrush site for current figures):

  • Free account: permanent but heavily limited (around 10 requests a day and a handful of tracked keywords). Enough to preview the data, not to run a real workflow.
  • Pro: about $139.95 per month (around $117 on annual billing). 5 projects and 500 tracked keywords, with the core SEO tools. Aimed at solo users and small sites.
  • Guru: about $249.95 per month (around $208 annual). 15 projects and 1,500 keywords, plus the Content Marketing Toolkit, historical data, and multi-location tracking. The popular tier for serious users.
  • Business: about $499.95 per month (around $417 annual). 40 projects, 5,000 keywords, API access, and the highest limits, built for agencies and large teams.

There is a 7-day free trial on the paid plans. Two honest caveats: add-ons (extra user seats, the Trends toolkit, AI visibility, local SEO) cost extra on top, and the newer Semrush One bundle that adds AI-visibility tracking starts higher, at around $199 per month.

Who it is for

This is the part to be straight about. Semrush is professional-grade and expensive, and for a simple Squarespace brochure site it is overkill: a lighter, cheaper, Squarespace-native tool will serve you better day to day for on-page fixes. Semrush earns its cost when you are in a genuinely competitive niche, doing serious content and keyword work, running paid search, or managing SEO across several sites as an agency. Think of it as the research and strategy layer, not as a tool you use inside the Squarespace editor.

Our verdict

Semrush offers the deepest data and the widest toolset of anything in this guide, and the price reflects that. For most individual Squarespace owners it is more than they need, and we would point them to a Squarespace-focused tool first. But for competitive sites, content-led businesses, and agencies, it is the industry standard for keyword and competitor research, and well worth it at that level. The smart setup for many is to pair Semrush’s research with a Squarespace-native tool for the on-page work, rather than expecting either one to do everything.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush made for Squarespace?
No. Semrush works with any website and is not tied to a platform. You use it for research, tracking, and competitor analysis alongside your Squarespace site, rather than inside the Squarespace editor.

Is Semrush worth it for a small Squarespace site?
Often not. For a small or simple site, a cheaper tool (including a Squarespace-specific SEO tool) covers most of what you need. Semrush makes sense once you are in a competitive niche, publishing a lot of content, or managing multiple sites.

Is there a free version of Semrush?
There is a permanent free account, but it is very limited (roughly 10 requests a day). The paid plans come with a 7-day free trial.

How much does Semrush cost?
Pro is about $139.95 per month, Guru about $249.95, and Business about $499.95, with roughly 17 percent off on annual billing. Add-ons such as extra seats and AI visibility cost more on top.

What is the difference between the plans?
Pro covers core SEO for solo users and small sites. Guru adds the Content Marketing Toolkit and historical data for serious content work. Business adds API access and the highest limits for agencies and large teams.
