The State of the Squarespace Marketplace 2026
Squarespace powers millions of websites, but almost nobody publishes numbers on the independent marketplace that has grown up around it: the designers selling templates, the developers selling plugins and the educators selling courses. So we counted ours.
SquareLocator lists 1,361 live products from 87 sellers. This report breaks that catalogue down by price, category, creator and platform version. It is free to use, cite and share.
Key findings
- A typical premium template costs 12 times as much as a typical plugin.
- Templates are a crowded market of 73 designers. Plugins are dominated by a handful: five developers make 80% of them.
- 30% of premium templates are built on SquareKicker, and they sell for 60% more.
- 99% of templates and plugins are built for Squarespace 7.1. Version 7.0 has effectively disappeared from the market.
- One in six plugins is free.
- Clear gaps remain: just 3 SEO plugins, and only one template designed primarily for musicians.
A premium template costs 12 times as much as a plugin
The median premium Squarespace template is listed at $297. The median paid Squarespace plugin is $24.49. Half of all paid templates sit between $199 and $399, while half of paid plugins sit between $15 and $30.
The $200 to $299 band is the sweet spot for template designers: 40% of templates are priced there. Fewer than one in ten cost under $100.
Premium templates by price
Number of templates, by lowest listed price in USD. 467 templates from independent designers.
Plugins by price
Number of plugins, by lowest listed price in USD. 438 plugins from independent developers.
Finding 2Templates are fragmented. Plugins are concentrated.
Selling templates is a cottage industry. Most designers run a small, art-directed collection alongside client work, and 20 of them list a single template. Plugins are different: building and supporting code across Squarespace updates is harder to do part-time, so the market has consolidated around a few dedicated developers.
Share of plugins by developer
Number of plugins listed per developer.
Finding 3SquareKicker templates sell at a 60% premium
140 of the 467 premium templates we list, 30%, are built with SquareKicker, the design extension that adds layout and animation controls Squarespace does not offer natively. Their median price is $399, against $249 for templates built on standard Squarespace.
Buyers should factor in the SquareKicker subscription on top of the template price. For designers, it shows a market willing to pay more for sites that look less like a stock Squarespace build.
Finding 4Squarespace 7.1 has won
99% of the templates and plugins in our catalogue are built for Squarespace 7.1. Only three products are made specifically for 7.0. If you are still running a 7.0 site, the independent ecosystem has moved on, and most new tools will not work for you.
Finding 5One in six plugins is free
74 of 438 plugins, 17%, cost nothing. Free plugins are most common in styling: nearly half of all theming and styling plugins are free. Developers typically use them to build an audience before selling larger, paid tools. Browse all free Squarespace plugins.
Finding 6Where the gaps are
Most plugin development goes into how a site looks. Very little goes into how it performs.
Plugins by category
Number of plugins by primary category.
Templates show the same pattern. Designers cluster around creative and wellness businesses, while whole sectors are left with a handful of options.
Premium templates by primary industry
Number of templates by the main industry each was designed for. Selected industries.
For creators, these are the clearest openings: SEO and marketing plugins, and templates for travel, music, children's businesses and animal care.
What this means
For Squarespace users: budget around $300 for a premium template and $15 to $30 per plugin. Check whether a template needs SquareKicker before you buy, and confirm anything you buy is built for 7.1.
For designers and developers: template buyers have plenty of choice in creative and wellness niches, so standing out there is hard. Underserved industries and performance-focused plugins are where new products will face the least competition.
For the ecosystem: with a small number of developers producing most plugins, the health of the Squarespace plugin market depends heavily on a few independent businesses.
Methodology
All figures come from the live SquareLocator catalogue on 15 October 2026: 1,361 products from 87 sellers. SquareLocator is a curated marketplace, so this is a large sample of the independent Squarespace market rather than a complete census.
| Segment | Products |
|---|---|
| Premium templates from independent designers | 467 |
| Plugins from independent developers | 438 |
| Widgets from app platforms (Common Ninja, Elfsight) | 261 |
| Official Squarespace templates | 179 |
| Courses | 16 |
| Total | 1,361 |
Prices are the lowest listed price for each product in US dollars, taken from the creator's own site. Official Squarespace templates and widget platforms are excluded from the price, creator and category analysis because they are free or freemium. Medians are used rather than averages so that a few very expensive products do not skew the results. Categories and industries reflect how each product is classified on SquareLocator.
