A Squarespace blog gives readers "older" and "newer" links and not much else, which is fine for a dozen posts and painful for two hundred. Squarespace Pagination from Squarewebsites replaces that with numbered page links, so a reader can jump straight to page eight, or back to the start, without clicking through everything in between. The styling is customisable to match your site, and the controls work on mobile as well as desktop.Who it suitsEstablished blogs with a deep archive, news and magazine style sites, and any Squarespace site where the collection page has become the main way people browse. We would also consider it for a resources or tutorials section that keeps growing. One honest caveatNumbered pagination helps people move around an archive, but it does not help them find a specific post. If readers are searching for topics rather than browsing by date, a search or category filter will do more for them than page numbers.InstallationSquarewebsites plugins are supplied as code you add to your Squarespace site following their instructions, with settings for how many page links to show and how they look. Custom code normally requires a plan that allows code injection.
Squarehead is the advanced Squarespace course from Dave Hawkins, founder of London studio Made by Dave and an official Squarespace Expert, Circle Platinum Partner and Authorised Trainer. It is built for designers who can already put together a decent 7.1 site but have hit a ceiling: custom CSS still feels like guesswork, every build starts from scratch, and pricing is based on hours rather than value.
Related guide: see how it compares with the other seven courses I rate in our best Squarespace courses in 2026 roundup, where it is the pick for working designers.
What Mycelium isMycelium is one of Squarespace's own free 7.1 templates, built on Fluid Engine and styled as a small print shop for a landscape photographer. The demo is dark and quiet: near-black backgrounds, a red accent, lower-case type and moody photographs of Icelandic coastlines, riverbeds and hot springs. The old listing on this page described a four page portfolio with Home, About, Portfolio and Contact pages; the actual demo is three pages and the middle one is a shop. If you want to sell prints from a minimal, image-led site, this is one of the few free Squarespace templates built around that. What it doesThe pages in the demo are Home, Prints and Contact. Home is a full-bleed image page with a short line of copy and a link into the shop. Prints is a standard Squarespace store page with six sample products, each a landscape print with its own product page, price field, variants and add to cart button, so you inherit a working checkout rather than a gallery pretending to be one. Contact is a simple form page. There is no About page in the demo, no blog and no portfolio collection; the shop grid does the job of the portfolio. Because it is Fluid Engine, every section is drag and drop, and the dark palette, red accent and type all live in Site Styles.Who it suitsLandscape, fine art and travel photographers who want to sell prints, illustrators and printmakers with a small catalogue, and anyone who wants a dark, image-first store with very little chrome. It works as a side shop for a photographer whose main portfolio lives elsewhere, and it scales to a few dozen products before the single grid starts to feel crowded. One honest caveatSelling anything on Squarespace needs a Business plan or higher (Personal does not include commerce), and Business takes a transaction fee on top of card processing; if you plan to sell more than a handful of prints a month, price the Commerce plans first. The demo also has no About page, so you will build the story of who you are yourself, and the dark palette only works with strong, consistent imagery. Print fulfilment is not part of the template: Squarespace's built-in commerce handles orders, but printing and shipping is your problem, or a print-on-demand extension's.SetupMycelium is free and included with every Squarespace plan, but you need Business or above to take payments. You choose it when you start a new site, or preview the demo and click to start from it. There is no licence to buy and nothing to install. Squarespace 7.1 does not let you switch templates on an existing site, so if you already have a 7.1 site you would start a fresh trial from Mycelium and move your content across. Plan for one to three hours to replace the six demo products and the home and contact copy, plus time to connect a payment processor and set up shipping.Related guideSee how Mycelium compares with paid designer templates in my roundup of the best Squarespace templates for photographers, or browse the templates for photographers collection and the full Squarespace templates list. One announcement bar, one message: that is the Squarespace limit, and it forces sites to choose between the sale, the shipping deadline and the event. Will Myers' Rotating Announcement Bar removes the choice by rotating through multiple announcements using the same smooth vertical rotation effect Squarespace uses on its own website, and each announcement carries its own individual link, so every message goes somewhere relevant. Installation is copy-and-paste with a walkthrough video, handoff to clients is easy, the plugin is automatically maintained as Squarespace changes, and it costs $25 for a single site or $60 multi-use covering unlimited websites and templates for sale.

Galena focuses on showcasing fashion and beauty products through its intuitive display and lookbook layouts. The template prioritizes readability with clear typography and organized spacing. Ideal for brands wanting a robust visual presence, it allows for easy adjustments in Site Styles, making it a suitable choice for Squarespace 7.1 users in this niche.
Lusaka is a free Squarespace 7.1 template, and the demo is not a course site or a school. It is a fictional education non-profit, The Lusaka Foundation, which supports teachers and students: three programme pages, a vision page, a team page, a blog and a Donate page with a donation block. If you run a charity, foundation or community organisation and need to explain your programmes and take donations, Lusaka's structure is a closer match than most of the other free templates.
What is included
Eight pages in the navigation: Materials for Learning, Education for Teachers and Support for Communities (grouped under a Projects folder), Our Vision, Our Team, Blog, Donate, plus the home page. Home introduces the mission, summarises the three programmes with Learn More links, carries a quote from a school principal, and closes with contact details. Donate uses Squarespace's native donation block with preset amounts and a custom amount field. Our Team is a people grid with portraits and short bios.
Who it suits
Charities, foundations, NGOs, community groups, school trusts and education initiatives. The programme, vision, team and donate pattern is what most small non-profits ask me for, and it is all here. It could also be adapted by a training organisation or a social enterprise with a small set of services.
Trade-offs
Two caveats. The demo body copy is almost entirely lorem ipsum, so this is a structure to fill rather than copy to edit. And the donation block needs a Squarespace plan that supports donations and a connected payment processor before it takes a penny; it is not switched on by default. The visual style is clean and neutral rather than distinctive, which is fine for a non-profit but means the photography has to carry the personality.
How it installs
Open the template on squarespace.com and start with the design. Squarespace creates a trial site with the demo pages in place. The template is free; you pay for a Squarespace plan when you publish, and you will want a plan that supports the donation block if you intend to use it. It runs on 7.1 with Fluid Engine.

Ortiz offers photographers an image-centric layout with minimal design, featuring strong hero sections and flexible gallery options. The template supports effective portfolio presentation, prioritizing visual storytelling without unnecessary clutter. Ideal for those showcasing photography work, it allows for easy customization to fit unique brand narratives on Squarespace 7.1.
What Brower isBrower is one of Squarespace's own free 7.1 Fluid Engine templates, and it is a food blog, not a restaurant site. The homepage is a masonry Blog collection with fourteen sample posts, the About page introduces "a food knowledge sharing community", and Contact is a single page. The old listing on this page described a restaurant template with menus, bookings and galleries; that was wrong. There is no menu page, no reservations block and no gallery in the demo. What it doesThe homepage blog uses Squarespace's masonry layout with author, date, excerpt and a Read More link on each card, so a food writer or recipe developer can publish straight into a layout that already handles mixed image heights. Each post is a normal blog post with categories, tags, comments and sharing available in the settings. The About page is a plain Fluid Engine page with text and imagery (the demo photography was shot at the New York restaurant Buvette), and Contact is ready for a form block. A newsletter sign up sits in the footer for building a list. As with every Squarespace template, fonts, colours and spacing are edited in Site Styles.Who it suitsFood writers, recipe bloggers, restaurant critics, cookery teachers and small food communities who want the writing front and centre. It is also a decent base for a cafe or bakery that mainly wants a journal and a contact page, provided you are willing to add the commercial pages yourself. One honest caveatIf you run a restaurant this is the wrong starting point. There is no menu block, no reservation or table booking integration, no opening hours section and no gallery in the demo, and the homepage being a Blog collection means the first thing visitors see is your latest post rather than a hero with your location and hours. All of that can be built, but at that point another Squarespace template will get you there faster.SetupBrower is free and included with every Squarespace plan. Start a trial from the Squarespace templates page, choose Brower and the sample posts are loaded for you to replace. No licence and no install. The footer newsletter block needs a storage connection such as Squarespace Email Campaigns or Mailchimp before it will collect addresses, and Commerce or custom code need a Core plan or higher.Related guideBrowse the templates for food and drink brands sub-collection or the full Squarespace templates collection, and read my guide on how to choose the right Squarespace template before settling on a free one.

What Count Up Animation isCount Up Animation is a small Squarespace plugin by Will Myers that turns a number in an ordinary text block into a counter that animates from zero up to its value when it scrolls into view. It is a code snippet you install once, then trigger by adding a link to the number you want animated. The old listing on this page described the right plugin, but it was written as generic marketing copy; this is what it actually does. What it doesYou write your stat in a normal text block, including scaled text blocks, and the plugin does the rest with no code. The animation waits until the number is in view rather than running on page load, so visitors see the count happen. You can keep a suffix such as a plus sign or a percentage after the number, apply your own colours, and it works on mobile. It supports large formatted numbers (the demo counts to over one million) and runs on any Squarespace 7.1 site. Installation is documented on a How It Works page with a walkthrough.Who it suitsSites with a stats section: agencies showing projects delivered, charities showing people helped, gyms showing members, SaaS pages showing users. It is a one afternoon addition that makes a plain row of numbers feel deliberate, and designers can reuse it across client sites on the multi use licence. One honest caveatIt is a single effect. There is no odometer style rolling digit, no decimal counting option listed and no control over easing beyond what ships, so if you want a highly bespoke counter you will still be writing your own JavaScript. Also note the vendor product page currently shows the feature list of a different plugin (an announcement bar); the demo page is the accurate description, and I have written this review from that.SetupYou need a Squarespace Core (formerly Business) plan or higher because the plugin relies on code injection; it does not run on Basic or Personal plans. Install is copy and paste, then you mark each number to animate by targeting it with a link. The single licence covers one website; the multi use licence covers unlimited websites and templates for sale. Support is best effort for the first 60 days.Related guideCompare it with the other motion plugins I list in the Squarespace animation plugins sub-collection, browse the full plugins collection, or read my roundup of the best Squarespace plugins in 2026.
What Video Lightbox isVideo Lightbox is a Squarespace plugin by Squarespell that opens a YouTube or Vimeo video in a popup overlay when a visitor clicks a text link, button, icon or video block, instead of navigating away or embedding a player in the page. The old listing on this page described a layout tool for controlling video grid columns, spacing and breakpoints; that was a different product. This is a lightbox effect for hosted video links, nothing more. What it doesYou paste a YouTube or Vimeo URL into the link field of a text link, button, icon or video block, and the plugin intercepts the click and plays the video in a centred lightbox with a darkened backdrop. It works across page types, so a portfolio thumbnail, a product page button and a testimonial icon can all launch video the same way. Setup is copy and paste with a step by step guide, no coding needed, and the styling of the overlay can be adjusted. Squarespell sells it on a single site licence or a multi use licence for unlimited websites, and discounts apply automatically when you buy two or more of their plugins together.Who it suitsPortfolios and showreels, product pages with demo videos, course and coaching sites with a preview lesson, and any page where a full embedded player would clutter the layout. Designers who deliver several client sites will get the most from the multi use licence. One honest caveatIt only works with YouTube and Vimeo links. Videos uploaded to Squarespace itself are not supported, so if your client hosts on Squarespace you would need to move the files to one of those platforms first. There is also no gallery mode: each trigger opens one video, and the page has to be built with the right link fields for the plugin to pick up.SetupAny Squarespace 7.1 site on a plan that allows code injection, which means Core or higher. Install is a copy and paste of the plugin code into your site's code injection or a page header, then link your elements to YouTube or Vimeo URLs. Delivery is an instant download. The single licence covers one website; the multi use licence covers unlimited websites.Related guideI compare it with the alternatives in my roundup of the best Squarespace gallery and lightbox plugins in 2026. Browse the full plugins collection or the gallery plugins sub-collection for more.
Meriden is one of Squarespace's own free 7.1 templates, built on Fluid Engine and styled as the website of a life coach. The demo site is called Meriden Life Coaching: a warm orange and neutral palette, big serif headlines and a confident first-person tone. The pages in the demo nav are Home, Courses, Work with Me, Podcast and About, plus a Free Consultation button in the header. The home page sets out the coaching method in three steps (Focus, Reflect, Refine), promotes an upcoming virtual course and ends with a newsletter sign-up. The header also carries a customer login and a cart, so Courses is set up to sell rather than just list.
Who it suits
Life coaches first, then relationship, career and mindset coaches, and anyone who sells a mix of one-to-one sessions, courses and a podcast. If your business runs on a free discovery call and an email list, the demo already has that funnel in place. I would not pick it for a fitness studio, whatever older listings said.
One honest caveat
Meriden is a starting layout, not a finished site. Every image and line of copy is a placeholder, there is no custom code, and the Courses and Podcast pages only do their job once you have set up Squarespace Courses and connected a podcast feed. Selling courses also depends on the plan you are on, so check that before you build around that page.
Setting it up
Choose Meriden in Squarespace's template picker when you start a new site, or open the demo and start from it. Then swap the demo text and photographs, delete the sections you do not need and edit the rest with the drag and drop Fluid Engine editor; colours and type live in Site Styles. It sits in my free Squarespace templates collection, and you can compare it with paid designs in the Squarespace templates for coaches collection.

AccoTabs handles the two layouts Squarespace never shipped properly, accordions and tabs, in a single plugin with a clever third mode: Auto-Adapt switches tabs into stacked accordions based on the visitor's screen width, so mobile takes care of itself. Content can be pulled dynamically from a Blog or Portfolio page, with thumbnail images available inside tab titles, and behaviour options include limiting accordions to one open panel at a time or enabling hover-activated tabs. Customisation runs through a built-in CSS generator with no coding required, and installation is a copy and paste snippet. $49 as a one-off for a single site, with a $249 agency licence covering unlimited client sites.See what else made our roundup of the best Squarespace plugins in 2026.
What Animated Rotating Words isAnimated Rotating Words is a free Squarespace plugin from Squarespell that cycles through a list of words inside a heading or line of text, so a hero can read "We build websites for florists, for coaches, for studios" with the last word swapping on a timer. The old listing on this page described scroll triggered reveals and hover transitions; that was a different product. This plugin does one thing: rotating text. What it doesYou add the plugin code to your site, mark the words you want to rotate, and they animate in sequence. Squarespell list controls for animation speed, colours and style, so the rotating words can be given an accent colour or a different weight from the rest of the heading. It is delivered as an instant download with the code and instructions, and it is priced at nothing, which makes it a low risk way to try a Squarespell plugin before buying one of their paid ones. Bundle discounts on their paid plugins are applied automatically at checkout, though that does not affect this free item.Who it suitsAgencies, freelancers and studios who serve several audiences and want the hero headline to speak to each of them in turn, and anyone who wants a small amount of motion on an otherwise static Squarespace homepage without paying for a full animation library. One honest caveatRotating text is easy to overdo and it is a known accessibility irritant for some readers, so keep it to one instance per page and keep the words short. Squarespell also note on the listing that the download file has not yet been added to their new marketplace site, so check that the file is actually there before relying on it for a deadline. There is no documented control over the number of words or the pause length beyond the speed setting.SetupYou need a Squarespace 7.1 site on a plan with code injection, which means Core or higher; the Basic plan does not allow custom code. Install is a copy and paste of the plugin code, then you mark the words to rotate in your text block. It is free, with no licence limit stated, and delivery is an instant download from Squarespell.Related guideI list other no cost options in my roundup of the best free Squarespace plugins in 2026.
