Product Lightbox For Squarespace

Squarespace's default product image lightbox is basic: a larger image on a dark background and not much else. Product Lightbox for Squarespace, from the Vietnamese plugin studio BeyondSpace, replaces it on store and product pages with a lightbox built for shopping. Customers can pinch to zoom on a phone and zoom into fine detail on desktop, move between images with thumbnails, watch product videos inside the same gallery, read captions taken from your image alt text and use a buy button without closing the overlay. BeyondSpace sell it as a feature of their wider Lightbox Studio plugin.

What it includes

Pinch-to-zoom and swipe on mobile, mouse or trackpad zoom on desktop, thumbnail navigation, product video inside the lightbox gallery, optional captions from image alt values, custom buttons or links in captions, smooth transitions that can be switched off, loading indicators for large zoom images, and lazy loading so the extra images do not slow the page. It works on both Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1 templates once the lightbox option is enabled on your Product or Store page, and Squarespace's own hover image zoom can stay active alongside it.

Who it suits

Shops where detail sells the product: jewellery, textiles and fashion, furniture and homeware, art prints and anything handmade where a customer wants to inspect the finish before buying. It also suits stores that already shoot product video and want it shown with the stills rather than buried lower on the page.

Trade-offs

Zoom is only as good as your photography; small or heavily compressed images pixelate when enlarged, so upload large, sharp originals. The product lightbox is one feature of Lightbox Studio, so read the vendor page to be clear on what the purchase covers. And custom code needs a Squarespace Core plan or higher (Business or Commerce on older plans), plus Squarespace Commerce for product pages to exist at all.

How it installs

Add BeyondSpace's code to your site following their instructions, then switch on the lightbox for your product pages. On 7.1 that means editing the product section, setting the layout to Simple to reveal the Click Action option and choosing Lightbox; on 7.0 Brine templates you enable Image Zoom and the lightbox in Site Styles. The plugin then replaces the default lightbox automatically.
