What Video Lightbox is
Video Lightbox is a small plugin from SQS Mods that turns any YouTube or Vimeo link on a Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1 site into a pop-up overlay. The old listing here described a gallery and masonry plugin for photographers; that is not what this is. It is a single-purpose video pop-up: the visitor clicks a text link, a button or a 7.0 image block and the video plays in a lightbox over the page instead of sending them away to YouTube.
What it does
The trigger is a link. Point a text link or a button at a YouTube or Vimeo URL, add the plugin's marker, and the click opens the overlay. On Squarespace 7.0 it also works on image blocks in the poster, card, overlap, collage and stack layouts, which is where it beats the older alternatives that only handled plain links. You can set the overlay background colour or gradient, choose the close control (an X, the word Close or your own wording) and set the width of the player.
Who it suits
Anyone with a showreel, a course preview, a welcome video or a testimonial clip who wants a tidy play button on the page rather than an embedded player taking up space. Coaches, videographers, agencies and course creators are the usual buyers. If you want a grid of videos with thumbnails, this is not the tool; look at a gallery plugin instead.
One honest caveat
The product page in the SQS Mods store is bare, so read the separate video plugin page on the vendor site to see the demos and FAQ before you buy. It supports YouTube and Vimeo only, it needs code injection so you must be on a Business plan or higher, and SQS Mods does not refund digital products. It is also a code snippet rather than a managed app, so if Squarespace changes its markup you are relying on the vendor to update it.
Setup
SQS Mods describes a three-step install that takes about five minutes: paste the snippet into code injection, use the version-specific snippet for 7.0 or 7.1, then add the marker to the links or buttons you want to trigger the pop-up. No further coding is needed, and the licence allows use on multiple sites you build yourself as long as the code is not shared.
