Overview

Squarespace downscales every uploaded image to a maximum width of 2,500 pixels, which wipes out the detail in large artwork, panoramas and plans. Macroom Viewer For Squarespace from BeyondSpace gets around this with deep zoom tiling: you slice the master image into small tiles, upload them to a Gallery Block, and the viewer stitches them back together on screen, loading only the tiles needed for the area being viewed. Visitors can pinch, pan and zoom, and the demo on the product page shows Van Gogh's The Bedroom at 8,211 by 6,501 pixels.

What you get

  • Deep zoom viewer for images far beyond the 2,500px Squarespace limit
  • Pinch, pan and zoom controls with an overview mini map
  • Tiles hosted in your own Squarespace Asset Library, no external hosting
  • Unlimited high resolution images on either licence
  • Choice of a $69 yearly subscription or a $99 one-time licence

Who it suits

Artists, galleries and photographers who sell on detail, architects and planners showing drawings, and anyone presenting large maps, infographics or panoramic landscapes.

Honest limits

Setup takes more effort than a normal image. You generate tiles with a deep zoom slicer (BeyondSpace offer a web version), upload them to a dedicated Asset Library folder and Gallery Block, then link an Image Block to that page. Gallery Blocks cap at 250 images and BeyondSpace recommend 70 to 120 tiles per image. The one-time licence includes 12 months of updates and support only.

How it is delivered

Two options: a $69 per year subscription with ongoing updates and priority support, or a $99 one-time perpetual licence with 12 months of updates and support. Installation instructions arrive after purchase, and BeyondSpace publish a full tutorial.

Macroom Viewer For Squarespace is a high resolution image viewer from BeyondSpace. Squarespace compresses and caps standard image uploads at 2,500 pixels wide, so fine textures in art, photography and plans are lost.

The plugin uses tiling. You cut the original into a pyramid of small tiles with a deep zoom generator, upload them to a folder in your Asset Library, add them to a standard Gallery Block, then place an Image Block linked to that page where the viewer should appear. The viewer loads a small overview tile first and fetches only the tiles needed as visitors zoom in.

BeyondSpace demonstrate it with NASA's Webb Pillars of Creation (8,423 by 14,589 pixels) and Van Gogh's The Bedroom (8,211 by 6,501 pixels). Visitors get pinch, pan and zoom controls with a mini map.

The main limit is the Gallery Block ceiling of 250 images; BeyondSpace recommend 70 to 120 tiles per image, using 512px or 1024px tiles.

Pricing is $69 per year (ongoing updates, priority support) or $99 one-time (perpetual licence with 12 months of updates and support), both with unlimited images and views.

FAQs

FAQs

What does Macroom Viewer do?
It displays super high resolution images on Squarespace by reassembling small image tiles in a zoomable viewer, bypassing the 2,500px upload limit.
How does it get around the Squarespace image limit?
You slice the original into tiles under the limit with a deep zoom generator, upload them to a Gallery Block and the viewer pieces them together on screen.
Will it slow my pages down?
BeyondSpace say no: the viewer first loads one small overview tile and then only fetches the tiles needed for the area a visitor zooms into.
How many tiles can one image use?
Gallery Blocks allow up to 250 images. BeyondSpace recommend 70 to 120 tiles per image, using 512px or 1024px tiles.
How much does it cost?
$69 per year with ongoing updates and priority support, or $99 one-time for a perpetual licence with 12 months of updates and support.
Do I need external image hosting?
No. Tiles are uploaded to your Squarespace Asset Library and Gallery Block, so there is no separate hosting bill.
