What Brower is

Brower is one of Squarespace's own free 7.1 Fluid Engine templates, and it is a food blog, not a restaurant site. The homepage is a masonry Blog collection with fourteen sample posts, the About page introduces "a food knowledge sharing community", and Contact is a single page. The old listing on this page described a restaurant template with menus, bookings and galleries; that was wrong. There is no menu page, no reservations block and no gallery in the demo.

What it does

The homepage blog uses Squarespace's masonry layout with author, date, excerpt and a Read More link on each card, so a food writer or recipe developer can publish straight into a layout that already handles mixed image heights. Each post is a normal blog post with categories, tags, comments and sharing available in the settings. The About page is a plain Fluid Engine page with text and imagery (the demo photography was shot at the New York restaurant Buvette), and Contact is ready for a form block. A newsletter sign up sits in the footer for building a list. As with every Squarespace template, fonts, colours and spacing are edited in Site Styles.

Who it suits

Food writers, recipe bloggers, restaurant critics, cookery teachers and small food communities who want the writing front and centre. It is also a decent base for a cafe or bakery that mainly wants a journal and a contact page, provided you are willing to add the commercial pages yourself.

One honest caveat

If you run a restaurant this is the wrong starting point. There is no menu block, no reservation or table booking integration, no opening hours section and no gallery in the demo, and the homepage being a Blog collection means the first thing visitors see is your latest post rather than a hero with your location and hours. All of that can be built, but at that point another Squarespace template will get you there faster.

Setup

Brower is free and included with every Squarespace plan. Start a trial from the Squarespace templates page, choose Brower and the sample posts are loaded for you to replace. No licence and no install. The footer newsletter block needs a storage connection such as Squarespace Email Campaigns or Mailchimp before it will collect addresses, and Commerce or custom code need a Core plan or higher.

FAQs

FAQs

What is Brower?
Brower is a free Squarespace 7.1 Fluid Engine template from Squarespace built as a food blog, with a masonry blog as the homepage, an About page and a Contact page.
Is Brower a restaurant template?
No. The old listing said it was, but the demo has no menu, no reservations, no opening hours and no gallery. It is a blog first design for food writers.
Which pages are included?
Blog (the homepage, with fourteen sample posts), About and Contact, plus a newsletter sign up in the footer.
How much does Brower cost?
Nothing beyond your Squarespace plan. You choose it when you start a trial and there is no separate licence or install.
Can I add a menu or bookings later?
Yes, with work. You can add a page with a menu block and a Squarespace Scheduling or third party reservations embed, but none of it is in the demo, so a restaurant focused template will be quicker.
Does the newsletter form work straight away?
The block is there, but it needs to be connected to a storage option such as Squarespace Email Campaigns or Mailchimp before it collects addresses.
