What Nevins is

Nevins is one of Squarespace's own free 7.1 Fluid Engine templates, built as a landscape and nature photographer's portfolio. The homepage is a Portfolio page rather than a normal page: a grid of nine project covers (Peaks, Coast, Wildlife, Seafaring, Horizon, Landscape, Crystals, Wharf and Dock in the demo) with a hover overlay, each opening into its own project page. The old listing on this page gave a Home, About, Portfolio and Contact page list; that was wrong. The real demo is Work, Blog and Contact, with the Work portfolio serving as the homepage.

What it does

The portfolio grid is the native Squarespace Portfolio collection in its basic grid layout with hover titles, so adding a project is a matter of creating a new portfolio item and uploading images. Each project page is a Fluid Engine page you can lay out with galleries, text and video. The Blog is a basic grid blog with four sample posts, and Contact is a single page ready for a form block and details. Navigation is minimal, the site title carries the photographer's name and the design uses a lot of white space so the images do the work. Fonts, colours and spacing are all controlled in Site Styles.

Who it suits

Photographers, especially landscape, travel and wildlife photographers, and visual artists who want a quiet grid of projects with no selling, no services page and no bio in the way. It is also a reasonable base for a design or illustration portfolio if you replace the imagery.

One honest caveat

There is no About page, no client galleries, no print shop and no pricing page in the demo, and the homepage being a Portfolio collection means you cannot add hero text or a call to action above the grid without restructuring. Squarespace also provide no client proofing or password protected galleries in this template beyond what any Squarespace site can do with page passwords, so wedding and portrait photographers who deliver galleries to clients will want a separate tool.

Setup

Nevins is free and included with every Squarespace plan. Start a trial from the Squarespace templates page, choose Nevins and the demo projects and posts are loaded for you to replace. There is no licence and no install. If you want to sell prints later you will need a Core plan or higher for Commerce, and any custom code also needs Core or higher.
